Harrier highlights

Latest Update: Tata Motors is developing a 1.6-litre petrol engine to be offered with the Harrier, which is only available with a diesel right now. Read in detail here.

Tata Harrier Variants and Price: Tata has introduced the Harrier in four variants: XE, XM, XT and XZ. It is priced between Rs 12.69 lakh and Rs 16.25 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). You can read the variant-wise breakdown and which one we’d recommend here.

Tata Harrier Powertrain: The Harrier is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that churns out 140PS of power and 350Nm of torque. It is the same engine under the bonnet of the Jeep Compass, where it is tuned for more power. Currently, Tata only offers a 6-speed manual transmission  that sends powers to the front wheels of the Harrier. A 4x4 model is not to be expected anytime soon but an automatic gearbox option with a 6-speed torque converter will be available around mid-2019. The Harrier also comes with driving modes (Eco, City and Sport) and multiple terrain response modes (Normal, Wet and Rough) in the top-spec XZ variant.

Tata Harrier Features: Tata has packed the Harrier with a host of features though most of them are offered on the top-end variant only, specially safety features like 6 airbags, traction control, ISOFIX child seat anchors, rollover mitigation control and electronic stability control. An 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system takes centrestage while a 7-inch multi-info display in the instrument cluster works in tandem with the infotainment system and displays navigation info, music, tripmeter and tachometer. Apart from these, a cooled storage compartment is also present underneath the front armrest and passengers in the rear get individual spaces to stow away their mobile phones. LED elements and projector headlamps are also on offer. Unlike its rivals the Harrier doesn’t get a sunroof, although it was a part of the feature list on the original H5X concept on which the Harrier is based.

Tata Harrier Rivals: The Harrier takes on the high-spec variants of the Hyundai Creta and the low/mid-spec variants of the Jeep Compass, and the upcoming MG Hector when it is launched in India this month.

Tata Harrier review

Things We Like in Harrier

  • Solid build quality. Doors shut with a prominent thud, good quality leather/plastics used in the interior too.
  • Diesel engine is a punchy performer on the highway, while being easy to drive inside the city.
  • Loaded! Leather upholstery, 8.8-inch touchscreen, 7-inch driver display, 9-speaker JBL audio system - it’s all in there.
  • Safety: 6 Airbags, ABS, ESC, Hill Descent Control et al make the Harrier one of the safest SUVs around.

Things We Don't Like in Harrier

  • No automatic / AWD variant on offer for the moment. Expect a Harrier automatic by mid-2019.
  • Rear-seat ride quality can get slightly bouncy, especially over large bumps.
  • Poor noise insulation. Takes away from the premium experience a fair bit.

Stand Out Features

  • ESC-based Terrain Response Modes: Rough Road/Wet. Alters engine/throttle maps to suit the situation.

  • 7-inch display in the instrument cluster is a segment first. Brilliant blend of form and function.

  • 9-speaker JBL audio system is mindblowing. Easily the best in its class.

CarDekho Verdict

Tata Harrier

"Tata has priced the Harrier really well, which, in our opinion sweetens the deal a whole lot. The best bit is that you don't really have drain the wallet to get a decently specced variant either."

Let’s circle back to the original question, then. Should you and I happily cut a cheque of around Rs 20 lakh for a Tata? Yes, you should. Tata’s big gamble has finally paid off.
