Kicks highlights

Latest Update: Nissan has finally launched the Kicks SUV on January 22 and is priced between Rs 9.55 lakh to Rs 14.65 lakh. Read the details here. The deliveries for the new compact SUV are already underway while bookings were being accepted for a refundable token amount of Rs 25,000 prior to launch. Which Nissan Kicks variant offer the most value for money? Click here to find out.

Nissan Kicks Price: The Nissan Kicks petrol variants are priced between Rs 9.55 lakh to Rs 10.95 lakh while the diesel variants are priced between Rs 10.85 lakh and Rs 14.65 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom, Delhi).

Nissan Kicks Engines: Nissan has offered the Kicks with a choice between a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 106PS and 142Nm, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine that produces 110PS and 240Nm of torque. The petrol motor comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission while the diesel gets a 6-speed manual. While the powertrains are borrowed from Renault, there is no automatic transmission or AWD option at launch.

Nissan Kicks Variants & Safety Features: The Nissan Kicks is available in four variants - XL, XV, XV Premium and XV Premium Plus. The petrol engine is only available with the XL and XV variants. It gets dual front airbags, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD and brake assist, speed sensing auto lock and rear defogger as standard. However safety features like rear view camera and front fog lamps are offered from XV onwards while the front side airbags, rear fog lamps, follow-me-home headlamps and 360-degree camera view are restricted to the top-variant. It appears that the Nissan Kicks does not get ISOFIX child seat anchors which is a big miss for a car in this segment.

Nissan Kicks Features: The Nissan Kicks does get a couple of segment first features such as the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which has smartphone compatibility via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and cornering front fog lamps along with the LED projector headlamps. The Kicks comes with auto AC, rear AC vents, cruise control as standard while also offering keyless entry via smartcard, hill start assist, dynamic vehicle control and leather upholstery too.

Nissan Kicks Ground Clearance and Boot Space: The Nissan Kicks has a ground clearance of 210mm which is the same as the Renault Captur while the boot is listed to have a capacity of 400 litres.

Nissan Kicks Rivals: Nissan’s new compact SUV will compete with the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross and Renault Captur. There will be even more competitors with the Kia SP concept-based SUV, Skoda’s made-for-India SUV, Jeep Renegade and Volkswagen T-Cross coming soon as well.

Nissan Kicks review

Things We Like in Kicks

  • Quality interior: Quality of material, fit & finish inside the cabin is better than other cars in this segment
  • Mature ride: The ride is supple, but not bouncy. It can handle small and large road uncertainties at any speeds with aplomb
  • 360-degree parking assist: Cameras at the front, rear, and both sides give an all-around view to ease parking; segment-first feature
  • Noise insulation: Engine noise, road noise not as audible inside as in siblings (Captur, Duster, Terrano); lifts cabin experience up

Things We Don't Like in Kicks

  • No automatic transmission: Both engines are available with manual transmission only at launch. Automatic transmission with petrol engine is a must for buyers seeking convenience
  • Diesel Low-end drivability: Diesel engine lacks punch at the bottom of the rev range; requires downshifting to pick pace
  • Ergonomic issues: Driver’s seat set a little high; particularly uncomfortable for tall drivers. Footwell is too cramped
  • Feature misses: No light for passenger vanity mirror. Top variant misses out on auto-dimming interior rearview mirror, powered driver seat and sunroof

Stand Out Features

  • Automatic air-con: Not a breakthrough feature, but comes standard in Kicks

CarDekho Verdict

"Considering both the pros and cons leads us to the conclusion that the Kicks is a car for those who are looking for a properly stylish compact SUV."

The Kicks doesn’t feel big despite being amongst the largest cars in its segment. The cabin doesn’t feel spacious either. There are some ergonomic issues as well that might bother some drivers and it’s not the most well-equipped car too, missing out on features like auto-dimming IRVM and sunroof, both of which would have added immensely to its appeal. And then there’s the absence of automatic transmission.

Considering both the pros and cons leads us to the conclusion that the Kicks is a car for those who are looking for a properly stylish compact SUV. It’s for those who appreciate quality and are either buying an additional smaller (relatively) car for the family or want to upgrade their drive experience from an already premium sub-compact vehicle. While Nissan is expected to price it in the Rs 10-15 lakh range, if it it manages to top it out at Rs 12 lakh, the Kicks can appeal to a wider buyer set as it would then play the value card as well.
