Swift 2018 highlights

The 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift was launched at a starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh going till Rs 8.29 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) at Auto Expo 2018 (Read complete launch report here). Within just 145 days of its launch, the Swift has managed to clock 1 lakh unit sales, beating the sales record set by its sub-4m sedan sibling, the Dzire. Read our review of the new Swift here.

The new Swift is available in four variants each - L, V, Z and Z+, with both the petrol and diesel engines. While the engine and power output remain unchanged, it is now available with a 5-speed automatic transmission (AMT) aside from the manual one too. The new Swift AMT prices range between Rs 6.34 lakh and Rs 7.96 lakh. The 2018 Swift’s mileage has gone up thanks to its lighter weight, and the ARAI-certified figures now read 22kmpl and 28.4kmpl for petrol and diesel, respectively.

The 2018 Maruti Swift gets lots of new features such as auto LED projector headlamps with daytime running LEDs, tail lamps with LED brake lights and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety features such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, and Isofix child seat anchors are standard with the new model.

The new Swift revives its rivalry with the Ford Figo and the Hyundai Grand i10.

CarDekho Verdict

This is for the first time in the 12 years of the Swift that Maruti Suzuki has introduced its compact sedan sibling, the Dzire, first, which gave us an idea of what to expect from the new Swift. What was unexpected is how Maruti Suzuki has given the Swift its original sporty character that takes this hatchback off the safe path that Maruti could have chosen to follow. The big question, then, is – is the third-generation Swift better than the one that it replaces?

"The new-gen Swift, then, is a package that is as sensible as it is exciting."

While the Swift has become more practical thanks to better space, features and a bigger boot, it has now also become more fun to drive. Yes, the base L variant does skimp on equipment and the top-end Z+ variant does not get AMT just yet. But overall, the Swift 2018, continues to be what it already was - sensible and exciting. Perhaps, some more now.
