S 201 highlights

Mahindra has announced the official name of the S201 and it will be called the XUV300. The sub-4m SUV will be launched in mid-February 2019. It is based on the SsangYong Tivoli with reworked front and rear profiles to tuck under four metres in length. Powering the Mahindra XUV300 will be Mahindra’s new 1.5-litre diesel engine which made its debut with the Marazzo in September 2018. Apart from the diesel engine, there will also be a petrol engine on offer. Once launched, the Mahindra XUV300 will go up against the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, the Tata Nexon as well as the upcoming Hyundai sub-4 metre SUV codenamed the QXi. The Mahindra XUV300 is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 8-12 lakh.

Did you know? Mahindra is also working on an electric version of the XUV300. Read more about it here.

Mahindra S 201 review

Things We Like in S 201

  • Since the cabin appears to be identical to the SsangYong Tivoli, which wasn’t designed as a sub-compact SUV, the S201 could be among the more spacious offerings in the sub-4m SUV space
  • Being a monocoque SUV, the Mahindra S201 should offer better handling dynamics and fuel efficiency compared to Mahindra’s existing sub-4m SUVs – the TUV300 and NuvoSport

Things We Don't Like in S 201

  • Interiors seem to be a straight lift from the Tivoli, which has been on sale in Europe since 2015, so the cabin might look a bit dated upon launch
  • With Mahindra’s existing sub-4m offerings, the TUV300 and the NuvoSport, not being able to make any mark in the segment, it is certainly late to the party now

Stand Out Features

  • Expected to get XUV500-borrowed 7-inch infotainment system with Android Auto support

  • With all-four disc brakes, the S201 could be among the handful of cars in the sub-Rs 10 lakh price bracket that offer all-around disc brakes

  • Like the Tivoli, the S201 is likely to get dual-zone climate control, which will be a segment-first feature

CarDekho Verdict

Despite its existing sub-4m SUVs not being so successful, Mahindra would be betting big on the upcoming S201 in the ever-growing sub-compact SUV space. It is ruled by the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza currently, followed by the popular and extremely competitive Ford EcoSport and the economically priced Tata Nexon.

" If you factor in the expected packaging of the SsangYong Tivoli-based offering, the S201 does appear to be a promising product"
