Mahindra Ssangyong Tivoli review

Introduction:

The 2016 Auto Expo in Delhi has marked the debut of several stunning vehicles and one among them is Mahindra SsangYong Tivoli. This luxurious SUV has already been launched in the Korean market last year and is doing quite well. The company is yet to make an announcement about its launch in India, but it is being speculated to hit the market during the second half of 2016.

Pros:

1. It is likely to come with an advanced infotainment system that may also support functions like Bluetooth connectivity and navigation system.

2. Safety quotient. Said to feature around seven airbags that prevents the risk of injury to a great extent.

Cons:

1. As of now, there is little information available about this vehicle, and it would be unfair to show its downsides.

Stand Out Features:

1. Six speed automatic transmission gear box. Reported to deliver excellent performance besides returning decent fuel economy.

Overview:

Tivoli is one among the much awaited vehicles that was finally unveiled during the grand event, the Indian Auto Expo 2016. Internationally, it has gained a lot of attention and with this model, the company is planning to target the younger audience here. This robust machine, which has been spotted being tested a few times, may arrive the country's market during the second half of this year. However, the exact details are not out yet. This utility vehicle is said to be based on the XIV-Adventure concept and will be the first model from SsangYong under the ownership of Mahindra and Mahindra. Also, it will be the first product from this brand, whose body structure is made of about 70 percent of high strength steel. Going into the technical details, it will probably get two engine options – 1.6-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol. Also 1.5-litre mHawk80 diesel engine is also on cards. Transmission duties would be handed over to the 6-speed manual gearbox. On the features front, this SUV might get a touchscreen display, automatic climate control and adjustable steering column. It may be priced between Rs. 10 to 14 lakh range and it will lock horns with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Maruti S-Cross and Renault Duster once it is launched.

Exteriors:

One look at its pictures, will give you a good impression on Tivoli, which is indeed appealing than many other models of Mahindra. It is huge, muscular and at the same time carries the style element as well, which will easily attract the young car enthusiasts.

Looks like, Tivoli has got generous exterior dimensions and it is said to come with a total width of around 1795mm. As for the length and height, it may measure 4195mm and 1590mm respectively. Coming to the wheelbase, it will be around 2600mm, which is decent indeed.

Its front fascia looks quite aggressive with sweptback headlight cluster that may equip luminous headlamps and turn indicators. Also, it may get LED daytime running lights that is further adding to its style.

A wide radiator grille sits between these bright lamps, while the prominent insignia is emphasizing it further.

The hood with character lines and the beltline chrome molding brings it a luxurious and sleek tone.

The lower bumper features a perforated air intake that is also flanked by a couple of fog lamps.

On the sides, the spotlight will be definitely on its attractively designed alloy wheels that are adorned with radial tubeless tyres. These rims are likely to be of 16 inches, while the tyres may be sized 205/60R

The outside mirrors might be offered in two tone color and LED side turn blinkers are also noticeable. Whereas the B and C pillars are likely to get the glossy black finish.

Its rear end look simply alluring with LED combination lamps and sporty spoiler that is mounted with LED stop lamp.

In the pictures, we can also see the rear fog lamp, roof mounted antenna as well as the striking boot lid with company's logo neatly embossed on it.

Besides these, it is anticipated to come with luggage storage capacity of around 423 litres, which seems quite good compared to its rivals. If it gets rear foldable seats then, it would be an added benefit as this will increase the boot space further.

Interior:

Whether it is the attractive beige or the stunning black color scheme, the company might succeed in giving a pleasant driving experience to its buyers once it hits our market. Its not just the decoration and design theme, but the automaker might have also focused on its interior dimensions to make it look generous.

We can clearly observe the contemporary style of its dashboard in one of its images. In the global market, it is offered with a supervision instrument cluster and hence, we can expect the same to come in our Indian version as well.

A sporty steering wheel might be on the offer with premium leather wrapping. It may also be mounted with audio and phone switches.

It is likely to get a 7-inch infotainment system with an MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity and navigation system as well. And an automatic air conditioner might be offered with climate control function. Both these systems will be equipped to the stylish center console at front.

As per the reports, it will be incorporated with well cushioned seats that are likely to get folding function in the rear. Whereas, the height adjustable facility to the driver's seat is also expected.

Besides all these interesting elements, we are also expecting it to have cup holders, vanity mirrors, stainless door scuff plates, room lamps and many other such aspects.

Performance:

Tivoli might be introduced in the country with two engine options like it is in the international markets. However, rumors going round the market that Mahindra might offer this compact SUV with a 1.5-litre mHawk80 diesel motor, which is currently powering the TUV300.

Petrol:

As per the speculations, it may have a 1.6-litre petrol power plant with four cylinders. It is said to be producing a peak power of 126bhp in combination with torque output of 160Nm. It is most likely that this power plant would be offered with a six speed manual gearbox as standard, while automatic transmission gearbox would be an optional feature.

Diesel:

News is also doing rounds that it may be offered with a 1.6-litre diesel motor comprising of four cylinders and 16 valves. This is likely to make 113bhp maximum power and yield 300Nm torque output. Nothing much has been revealed about its technical specifications, and we will get to know about its mileage and top speed only when after its launch.

Ride and Handling:

Mahindra SsangYong Tivoli is said to be made of high tensile strength steel, which makes it highly rigid yet light in weight. It is likely to get a McPherson strut on the front axle and a torsion beam on the rear one, which makes it stable in all conditions besides ensuring an exceptional ride quality. As for the braking, it will mostly be fitted with disc brakes on all its four wheels. Aside from these, advanced systems such as the anti lock braking and electronic brake force distribution might also be on the offer. Alike in the other version, this model too may be bestowed with a power assisted steering column that will help you to steer through the streets effortlessly.

Safety :

Looks like this SUV may be equipped with several security attributes that will offer enhanced passenger protection. It is reported to come with tyre pressure monitoring system, seven airbags, and reverse parking sensors with camera. The other features which we can expect in this vehicle would be seat belts with front pretensioners, central locking, strong body structure and engine immobilizer as well.

Variants:

As of now, we have no information about the number of variants it might come with.

Verdict:

This latest model from Mahindra SsangYong does look impressive with a few curves on the outside along with some state-of-the-art elements inside. However, it is too soon to talk about its engine performance as nothing much has been revealed yet about the technical side of this machine. But considering the available information, this one might give a tough competition to other SUVs in this segment.
