How does the upcoming City fare against its Indian rivals when we compare the numbers?

Honda recently revealed the new-generation City in Thailand, which we will get in India sometime in the middle of next year. Now that we know that it will be coming to India, we couldn’t help but wonder how its numbers would hold against the rivals of the current-gen City. Take a look for yourself.

*Engine specs are of current City as the new-gen City is expected to use the same set of engines.

**Engine specs are of the Kia Seltos as the Hyundai Verna will use 1.5-litre Kia engines in the BS6 era.

Most Powerful: Honda City

Torquiest: Volkswagen Vento

Most Fuel Efficient: Maruti Ciaz

The current City is the most powerful car in its class and we don’t expect that to change with the new generation model. However, with the upcoming Verna using Kia engines, things could become close, especially if converting the current engine to meet BS6 emission norms means dropping a couple of PS in power. The Vento’s turbocharged TSI engine makes the most torque in this segment whereas if fuel efficiency is your primary concern, the Ciaz impresses the most.

Most Powerful: 2020 Hyundai Verna (using the Kia engine)

Torquiest: 2020 Hyundai Verna (using the Kia engine), Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento

Most Fuel Efficient: Maruti Ciaz

If Hyundai decides to use the Kia engine in the same state of tune, the Verna will become the most powerful engine of this lot. When comparing torque, the Verna, Rapid and Vento are on the same page whereas the Ciaz is once again the most fuel efficient of the bunch.

The Maruti Ciaz has the least expensive variant on offer in the segment. Once the new Honda City is launched in India, we believe it will have the most expensive top-spec variant.

We expect Honda to launch the new-generation City in India sometime in mid-2020. On the other hand, the 2020 Hyundai Verna is expected to arrive in our market before the BS6 deadline.
