Jeep has finally stepped in India and its performance oriented Grand Cherokee SRT will take on BMW’s 'M' version of the X5.
Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has officially launched its Jeep brand in the country today. Besides the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler Unlimited, Jeep has also launched the performance-spec Cherokee SRT in the country. The ‘M’ version of the X5 competes with the go-fast version of the Cherokee since Mercedes-Benz and Audi have no performance-oriented offering in this class. Here’s how the Cherokee SRT competes with the BMW X5M on paper.

Engine and performance
Out of these two performance-oriented SUVs, the BMW has a lower displacement engine, but it produces more power and torque.
The Cherokee SRT is pulled by a massive 6.4-litre naturally aspirated 'Hemi' V8. This engine is capable of generating 475PS of max power and 630Nm of peak torque, and is coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The BMW takes the lead on paper with its relatively small displacement turbocharged motor – the 4.4-litre turbocharged BMW V8 puts out a blistering 575PS of peak power and 750Nm of max twist.
The more powerful BMW hits the clock in the 0-100kmph sprint in around 4.2 seconds, while the naturally aspirated Jeep hits it at 4.9 seconds.
The Jeep offers adaptive Bi-Xenon HID headlamps and LED taillights. The SRT rides on 20-inchers – all 295/45 cross-section (all season tyres). In terms of infotainment system, it comes with FCA’s 8.4-inch Uconnect unit coupled to a 19-speaker Harman Kardon system and also comes with a rear seat entertainment unit. The instrument cluster is an all-digital 7-inch unit.
The expensive BMW, on the other hand, offers adaptive LED headlights with four LED DRL light rings including auto high beam assistance. The Bimmer also rides on 20-inchers (Front: 285/40 R 20, Rear: 325/35). It comes with iDrive Touch infotainment unit that features a 10.1-inch display and is coupled to a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system (600W). While Bang & Olufsen high-end surround sound system is optional along with the rear-seat entertainment package.
In terms of safety, the Grand Cherokee SRT comes with dual front, driver knee and side as well as side curtain airbags. Rest of the features include hill ascend and descend, traction control, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, rain brake support, front and rear parking sensors with rearview camera, front active headrests, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and electronic limited slip differential. Besides these, the SRT further offers Brembo performance brakes and adaptive dampers.
