The sub-4m SUV will continue being offered with a diesel engine
Ford EcoSport BS6 spotted testing ahead of introduction.
EcoSport currently offers with three BS4 engine options - 1.5-litre petrol and diesel and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol.
Ford had earlier confirmed it will update its diesel engines to be BS6 compliant.
The EcoBoost 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine may not be updated for BS6.
Ford may replace it with an updated version of Mahindra’s 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine.
Ford’s range of cars sold in India is due to receive necessary updates to make their engines compliant with BS6 emission norms. Its most popular offering, the EcoSport sub-4 metre SUV, was recently spied testing in Pune, explicitly declaring itself to be a BS6 model.
The EcoSport is offered with three engine options - 1.5-litre diesel, 1.5-litre petrol and 1.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine. The 1.5-litre petrol unit produces 123PS/150Nm, the diesel engine produces 100PS/205Nm and the turbo-petrol produces 125PS/170Nm.
Earlier this year, Ford confirmed that it would continue to offer diesel engines in the BS6 era. This means that models such as the EcoSport, Figo, Aspire and Freestyle will continue to be offered with a Diesel engine post April 2020.
However, the future of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol engine, which is imported and only offered with a 6-speed manual, is uncertain. This powertrain option may be replaced by a new locally manufactured turbocharged petrol engine from Mahindra as part of the joint venture between the two carmakers. We expect it to be the updated version of Mahindra’s 1.2-litre turbo-petrol that powers the XUV300. It is expected to be more powerful than the 1.0-litre EcoBoost.
The Ford EcoSport sub-4m SUV will continue to compete against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Tata Nexon. It is currently priced between Rs 7.81 lakh and Rs 11.35 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Expect the BS6 updates to add a premium of around Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 for the naturally aspirated petrol variants, and a premium of upto Rs 1 lakh for the diesel variants.
