Gypsy highlights

The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has been on sale in India for more than 30 years. The Maruti Gypsy is available in two versions: soft top and hard top. The Gypsy soft top is priced at Rs 6.21 lakh, while the hard top retails for Rs 6.36 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi). The Maruti Gypsy doesn’t come with any sort of creature comforts like a power steering, power windows or even air conditioning and there are no safety features as well. However, despite the Gypsy’s age and lack of features, the Maruti Gypsy continues to enjoy a cult status in the country and still makes for an ideal rally car thanks to its sub-1 tonne kerb weight and 4x4 drivetrain.

With the implementation of more stringent safety norms in 2019, it is possible that Maruti Suzuki could soon pull the plug on the Gypsy. That’s where we think the upcoming fourth-gen Jimny will step in as Maruti’s new true-blue off-roader. In fact, the Gypsy is essentially the second-gen Jimny underneath.

Gypsy is one of the oldest and non upgraded suv in india .only change frok 80s model to 2000 is engine. Its very difficult to review Gypsy as none of the normal parameters that you would use to review a suv apply here No AC no power window no cosmetic interior And because the audience that this suv carter to doesn't care to much about things like upgrades or improvements It still rules from high terrain to sands Best off-roading and rally special vehicle in india Reliable engine from maruti ... 2

This is an iconic SUV .Engine has a displacement of 1298cc; The engine actually is more powerful than it seems with an amazing maximum output of 80bhp at 6000rpm, while the torque is also a sufficient 103Nm at 4500rpm. The engine is capable of producing a city mileage of 8.45 Kmpl and the same increases significantly on highways to about 11.96 Kmpl, which is not impressive and the spares are not available at all MGP stores. 4x4 drive at 4L Max speed is 90km/hr 4H /2H Max speed 120 km/hr advisabl... 16

Maruti Gypsy review

Things We Like in Gypsy

  • Healthy 210mm of ground clearance, light weight and four-wheel drive gives it fantastic off-road credentials.
  • Smooth and refined 1.3-litre petrol motor has a punchy mid-range.

Things We Don't Like in Gypsy

  • On road ride quality is slightly bumpy, thanks to the leaf spring suspension.
  • Bare bones cabin doesn’t feature basic necessities such as AC or power windows.

Stand Out Features

  • Four-wheel drive is offered as standard.

CarDekho Verdict

The Maruti Gypsy has stood the test of time, becoming an icon in the process. It isn’t something you buy to get to work, or buy the groceries in. In fact, it misses out on the most basic creature comforts you’d find even in the Alto 800.

"The Gypsy is meant to be taken off-road, and offers tremendous potential for modifications as well."

The Gypsy is meant to be taken off-road, and offers tremendous potential for modifications as well. In case you need a toy to muck about in over the weekends, the grand daddy of four-wheel drive SUVs in India tugs at the heart more than anything!
