Alto 800 highlights

Maruti Suzuki is readying the BSVI-compliant Alto 800 model well before the deadline of April, 2020 (Read complete report here). The carmaker has also ruled out plans of an electric version of its Alto in the near future citing high input costs (Tap here to know more). The Alto 800 is Maruti Suzuki’s entry-level offering in the Indian four-wheeler market. The Alto 800 is priced between Rs 2.51 lakh and Rs 3.78 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) and is one of the most popular hatchbacks in its segment.

The Alto 800 received a facelift in 2017 and now sports a revised front fascia with a slimmer front grille and headlamp, and a larger air intake. Its cabin gets fabric upholstery for the seats and door pads. You also get front power windows and a central locking system. ORVMs (outside rear view mirrors) and full wheel caps are also a part of the package.

Powered by a 0.8-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, the Alto 800 puts out 48PS of maximum power and 69Nm of peak torque, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The Alto 800 delivers a claimed mileage of 24.7kmpl for petrol and 33.44km/kg for CNG.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 rivals the likes of Renault Kwid 0.8, Datsun redi-GO 0.8 and Hyundai Eon.

Maruti Suzuki India launched the budget hatchback Alto 800 in the Indian car market back in the year 2012. The small car successfully overpowered the most loved iconic car i.e the Maruti 800. So until the other competitive cars started joining the portfolio, Alto 800 had a tight grip in the A segment space. Its rivals such as Tata Nano and Hyundai Eon could not put a tough fight against the model but as Renault Kwid came in the competition, its monthly sales started to decline and Kwid can be ca... 20

Maruti Alto 800 review

Things We Like in Alto 800

  • Maruti Suzuki's extensive sales and service network makes servicing and owning the car a hasslefree experience.
  • A no-nonsense choice for city-dwellers as the Alto 800 offers good ride quality at city speeds.
  • The Maruti Alto 800 has a very low cost of ownership, thus making it popular among first-time car buyers or those upgrading from two-wheelers.
  • Impressive mileage - the Maruti Alto 800’s frugal engine returns a claimed fuel efficiency of 24.7kmpl.

Things We Don't Like in Alto 800

  • Compact dimensions translate to limited leg and shoulder room at the rear. Narrow seats and a cramped rear bench restricts its use to short drives only.
  • Uninspiring design - the Maruti Alto 800 looks dull and outdated compared to newer entries like the Renault Kwid and the Datsun redi-GO.
  • High-speed performance of the Alto 800 is below average and it doesn’t inspire confidence at speeds over 100kmph.

Stand Out Features

  • Unlike its competition, the Maruti Alto 800 comes with optional airbags with each variant.

  • The Maruti Alto 800 offers decent ride quality manages to tackle ‘surprise’ potholes quite well.

  • Internally adjustable mirrors from the LXi variant onwards is useful; Kwid doesn’t get it

CarDekho Verdict

The Alto 800 gets the basics of an entry level hatchback right. It’s easy to drive, has a peppy engine and the service costs don’t burn a hole in the pocket. The only bit missing from the package are anti-lock brakes and dual airbags.

" If you’re considering the Alto 800 as your first car, it’s among the most sensible decisions you’d make."

Alto 800 Facelift: What's Changed?

Maruti has launched a facelift for the highest selling car in  India, the Alto 800. This mid-life makeover sports many cosmetic updates over the previous model. But, the biggest change  is the nine per cent increase in the fuel economy, which we think will attract even more buyers to this already popular car.  Read Full News
